(WINKIE CANYON) — A high-stakes rescue mission is underway in Winkie Country hoping to locate a group of missing Ozian explorers lost in the treacherous Winkie Canyon.
The team of six, led by veteran geologist Dr. Fernald Clove, disappeared three days ago while conducting a geological survey near the canyon’s southern ridge. Officials say their last communication came shortly before a massive rock slide was reported in the area.
Rescue efforts began early this morning, with a specialized team of first responders and search engineers from the Emerald City setting up a command base near the canyon’s rim.
Commander Laurel Tinn, local lead of the Royal Fire Brigade, says conditions are “extremely dangerous,” with shifting winds, unstable cliffs, and flash-flood risks complicating the mission.
“Our crews are using flying drones, echo-mapping spells, and rope teams to probe the canyon floor,” Tinn explained. “We’re hopeful, but this terrain can change by the minute.” Tinn said a team of highly-trained Flying Monkeys also was being brought in to assist in the search.
Local residents say the canyon, known for its golden cliffs and deep, shadowed crevasses, has long held a reputation for swallowing unwary travelers. The area’s unique magnetic properties can disrupt compasses and communication charms, making navigation difficult.
Witnesses from a nearby settlement in Western Winkie Country reported hearing “unusual echoes” and seeing faint lights in the canyon late last night, fueling speculation that the missing team may still be alive.
Among the rescuers is famed adventurer Roan Merrit, who led similar operations in the Great Gillikin Caves last year. Merrit told OPR, “We’re not giving up. Dr. Clove is one of the best, and if anyone could survive out there, it’s her team.”
Family members of the missing explorers have gathered at the Emerald City’s Central Observatory, where updates are being relayed in real-time through magical communication mirrors.
The Palace issued a statement expressing concern and offering support to the rescue operation, noting that “every available resource of the Realm” has been authorized for the mission.
Experts warn that with each passing hour, survival becomes more difficult as temperatures plunge overnight and canyon mists grow denser. As the sun sets over Winkie Canyon, the search continues and each echo from the depths carries both hope and uncertainty for those waiting above.
