Our question this week comes from Bertie in Quadling Country.
“Where did Tik-Tok get his name?”
Tik-Tok, Oz’s favorite mechanical man, was created in the magical country of Ev, across the Deadly Desert from Oz. He was built by the talented craftsmen at the Smith and Tinker Company, known for their distinct culture and advancements in mechanical creations. Mr. Tik-Tok is considered one of a kind.
He is a mechanical man, sometimes described as a “Machine Man” or “Clockwork Man.” His name comes from the ticking sound made by his clock-like internal mechanisms. The name emphasizes his mechanical nature and the idea that he operates with gears and springs.
Tik-Tok has three separate keyholes on his body, each corresponding to a specific function:
Speech: One key winds the mechanism that enables him to talk.
Action: Another key winds his movement, allowing him to walk and use his arms.
Thought: The third key winds his thinking mechanism, allowing him to reason and follow orders.
Each of these functions requires regular winding. If any one of these mechanisms runs down, Tik-Tok will cease to function in that area. For example, he might be unable to move while still being able to speak or think.
Unlike many other sentient beings in Oz, such as the Scarecrow or Jack Pumpkinhead, Tik-Tok is purely mechanical; he has no magical life force. So, despite his very polite demeanor, he follows only logical instructions and has no emotions. And we all love him for it!
